Literacy & Education

Literacy rate in Orissa has seen upward trend and is 72.87 percent as per 2011 population census. Of that, male literacy stands at 81.59 percent while female literacy is at 62.46 percent. But in tribal villages, where LAVS works, the female literacy percentage is as low as 15 % to 20 %. In response, LAVS operated 67 literacy centres during 2012-13 benefiting 945 women who became literate.

Poor enrolment, retention and completion rates of 6-14 age groups children in project villages of LAVS have been a concern for quite some time.  The passage of Right to Education Act has hardly made any difference as there exist neither awareness nor demand for education especially among poor tribal masses. LAVS in collaboration with school administration and education officials posted in its project areas has made consistent efforts to reverse the trends. It is heartening to see a turn around as the parents and CBOs have shown interest in ensuring schooling for every child.  72 % of its intervention villages now report 100% enrolment whereas the dropout rate has been contained at below 5 % in average.
